A Bread Factory Part One: For the Sake of Gold

July 13, 2019 2:00pm
Directed by Patrick Wang | 2018
With Tyne Daly, Elisabeth Henry, James Marsters
In the small upstate town of Checkford, Dorothea (Daly) and Greta (Henry) have run a local community arts space called the Bread Factory for 40 years when, suddenly, they find their beloved institution threatened by an unexpected rival: a pair of hotshot Chinese performance artists who have chosen Checkford as the site for their flashy new compound. With sly humor and an anything-goes sense of play, A Bread Factory speaks vitally to everything from gentrification to the economics of art to the meaning of community.
Patrick Wang’s two-part micro-epic is one of the most wonderfully surprising American independent films in years, garnering comparisons to the works of Robert Altman, Jacques Rivette, and Christopher Guest for its offbeat humanism and deft handling of a sprawling ensemble cast.
