Big Apple Barbecue Block Party – June 11, 2016 | 11:00am – 6:00pm

Big Apple Barbecue Block Party

To take a last-minute trip to the South this weekend, you needn’t look farther than Madison Square Park.

At the Big Apple Barbecue Block Party (one of the more alliterative festivals around town), there will be more than 15 vendors, as well as six country and folk acts. The meat will cost you; the music will not.

The vendors — excuse me, pitmasters — come from around the country, including barbecue havens like Tennessee and the Carolinas. There will also be local favorites, like Hometown, from Red Hook, Brooklyn, and Hill Country, a Madison Square Park neighbor.

With prices of $9 to $12, paying for food may not be a problem; prioritizing is another matter. We are talking about barbecue, after all, so you most likely won’t have room for more than one or two menu items, which range from the heavy (pulled-pork sandwiches) to the very heavy (baby back ribs with baked beans).

The music starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The artists will perform 75-minute sets, beginning with Reed Turner, fresh from another barbecue capital, Austin, Tex.

Saturday’s lineup also includes the dreamy Shook Twins and Andrew Combs, a Nashville-based musician with a Nashville sound.

The next day’s music opens with Whiskey Shivers and its barefoot, fiddling frontman, Bobby Fitzgerald. That might conjure an image of a banjo-strumming backyard band — and that’s not far from the reality.

Nikki Lane, whose most recent album was produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys, is up next, followed by another Nashville musician, Jonny Fritz.

A tip: Even if you don’t want to spend money on drinks or a barbecue binge, there will be promotional booths with free snacks, drinks and swag scattered throughout the park. And the park is available for picnicking if you want to bring your own gear and take in the scene.
