Black Power 50 Talks: Sohail Daulatzai and Marc Lamont Hill – September 13, 2016 – 6:30pm



As part of the Schomburg’s year-long exploration of the Black Power Movement, Sohail Daulatzai, author of Black Star, Crescent Moon: The Muslim International and Black Freedom Beyond America, offers a perspective on the political and cultural history of black internationalism from the 1950s to the present. Daulatzai will highlight how movements in the U.S. found connections to larger communities of resistance around the globe, and discuss Malcolm X, Black Islam, black radicalism, and the Muslim world within the context of the Black Power Movement.  Daulatzai will highlight how movements in the U.S. found connections to larger communities of resistance around the globe, and discuss Malcolm X, Black Islam, black radicalism, and the Muslim world within the context of the Black Power Movement. He will be in conversation with Marc Lamont Hill, professor, TV host, and author of Nobody: Casualties of America’s War on the Vulnerable, from Ferguson to Flint and Beyond.

Speaker Bio: Sohail Daulatzai is the author of Fifty Years of “The Battle of Algiers”: Past as Prologue, Black Star, Crescent Moon: The Muslim International and Black Freedom Beyond America and co-editor of Born to Use Mics, a literary remix of Nas’s album “Illmatic.” He is also the curator of the exhibit, “Return of the Mecca: The Art of Islam and Hip-Hop,” and has written for The Nation, Counterpunch, Al Jazeera, Souls, Wax Poetics, and Artbound, among others. He teaches in the Department of Film and Media Studies, the Department in African American Studies, and the Program in Global Middle East Studies at the University of California, Irvine.
