Dance Theatre of Harlem – Harlem Travel Guide – iPhone, iPad, iPod
Experience extraordinary multi-cultured dance
After the death of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in 1968, Arthur Mitchell, the first permanent African American male dancer with the New York City Ballet, was inspired to give ballet classes to local children in his community of Harlem. Mitchell and his teacher and mentor, Karel Shook, founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) as a school of the allied arts and a professional ballet company. Over the past forty years the theatre, world-renowned as a multicultural institution with students and dancers from the United States and abroad, has shattered the myth that Blacks could not perform classical ballet due to their physical build, or because ballet was foreign to Black culture. DTH serves as a living reminder that the arts belong to us all. Treat yourself to the DTH Open House Series, which hosts affordably priced community performances by its students, the Dance Theatre of Harlem Ensemble, as well as special guest artists.Nearby is the Church of Intercession where every Christmas season the church honors Clement Clarke Moore, the poet who wrote “A Visit from Saint Nicholas” and is buried in the cemetery across Broadway. Or you can visit the Hispanic Society of America Museum and Library. It promotes, preserves, and educates individuals on thearts and cultures of Spain, Portugal, and Latin America.Transportation: Bus—M3, M100, M101. Subway—A, B, C, D to 145th St. (front of train)

Literally a guide in my pocket

I can only subscribe to what other people already have told about the guide. It’s just great that I can read a place description, actually give a call its manager, find it on a map and even hook up on its Twitter channel to keep my eye on it. Very smart!
