East Harlem Sees New Retail, Restaurants

Several new retail and restaurant establishments have been popping up in East Harlem, according to the firm marketing Embelesar118, a new eight-story residential cooperative project at 152 East 118th Str.

Recent new businesses in the area include:

  • Goris Grocers, an upscale supermarket slated to open at 1660 Madison Avenue
  • Savoy Bakers on 110th Street and Lexington Avenue
  • Makana Hawaiian/Japanese Barbecue on First Avenue and 116th Street
  • Agua Fresca at 207 East 117th Street, which serves robust Latin American cuisine

Restaurateur Raphael Benavides, owner of Ricardo Steakhouse and Ceviche Tapas Bar, is planning a fine dining outpost, the eponymous Raphael’s on 124th Street and Second Avenue.

In addition to new retail in the area, including the East River Mall, there are many well-established favorites such as SpaHa on Lexington Avenue and 116th Street and Madison Cigar & Lounge on Madison Avenue and 119th Street, known to New Yorkers as a haven for local politicians and celebrities. The $700 million East Harlem Media, Entertainment and Cultural Center has already broken ground on Third Avenue and 125th Street.

“The neighborhood has changed dramatically in just the past five years,” says Orlando Marin, project manager for Embelesar118. “It still has a great mix of businesses and a very distinct Latino accent, but there is a greater range of choices now for shopping and dining. The neighborhood is becoming more diverse without losing its identity.”
