Focus On Harlem Academy
Just as Harlem is a unique community set in the heart of Manhattan, Harlem Academy is a unique school. It is an independent school that is very selective in choosing its students. Only 12% of those who apply are offered a position. And every family that enrolls a child signs a contract stating their personal and financial investment.
The school was founded in 2004 and has added one new grade each year. The 2010-2011 goes up to seventh grade. Harlem Academy administrators plan to educate through the eighth grade.
The average class size at Harlem Academy is 15. The tuition is on a sliding scale and no student is turned away for financial reasons.
One of the key components to an education at Harlem Academy is character development. Students are given jobs in the classroom. Students also meet with teachers once a week to discuss character development issues in a community meeting. Family members are invited to this meeting and are welcome any time.
Harlem Academy’s extended day format offers an optional reading program first thing in the morning, from 7:30 to 8:15. After school, athletics and homework help are available.
The curriculum consists of a robust literacy program designed to build reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Students are given independent reading assignments for at least 30 minutes each day. Formal writing instruction is offered in a workshop setting and Spanish is taught at all grade levels.
