Harlem Hospital Being Forced to Lay off at Least 20 Doctors…
Those dreaded words we have been hearing more and more so these past few years. “Imminent Layoffs”.
It seems no one is safe anymore- not even those whom we trust our lives with. It is such a sad thing to see anyone losing their job – but when those being turned away are those whom we have seen in the community for years; those who have helped a loved one when they were ill; and maybe even assisted in the birth of family members… It is just something no one can ever “get used to” hearing.
Harlem Hospital is the only public hospital left in Harlem and packs quite a bit of history within its walls. The late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stayed there after he was stabbed in 1958.
While it offers emergency services, Harlem Hospital is also home to an Asthma clinic, substance abuse programs, neonatal services, neurosurgery, dermatology, and many more specialized services and programs.
Come January 1, 2011 Columbia University will cut all ties with the hospital, creating a large gap in Harlem Hospital’s funding.
