Harlem 144 Guest House – Harlem Travel Guide – Sutro Media

Everything you could want at your fingertips and more

To experience authentic Harlem, start at Harlem 144 Guest House. Built in 1888 and on the National Register of Historic Places, this brownstone townhouse contains most of its original detail—from the elaborate wainscoting that runs from the parlor floor to the second floor, intricately carved fireplace mantles, to the parquet oak and yellow pine wood floors. There are two rooms on the third floor—a two-bedroom and a one-bedroom—that share a kitchen and bathroom; and a private apartment on the garden level. All rooms are furnished with original African, Caribbean, and African American fine art, antiques, and collectibles, and first-edition African American books. Each space is air-conditioned, has cable TV with premium channels, a DVD player, and wireless Internet access. The garden apartment’s country kitchen leads to a Zen garden. All kitchens are fully outfitted and there is free washer and dryer use. A healthy continental breakfast of fresh berries, yogurt, breakfast breads, orange juice, coffee, and tea is provided. The proprietor loves to recommend restaurants and clubs and can arrange authentic Harlem tours, order door-to-door car service, book Broadway/Off-Broadway plays, arrange reservations for one-of-a-kind Harlem events, and refer you to free outdoor summer events from swing and salsa dancing, major jazz and film festivals, to dance performances. Rates range from $100 to $225 a night. Discounts are offered for stays of seven nights and more. Also, favorable rates can be arranged for monthly stays.

An interest in classical music performances can be satisfied at the LonGar Ebony Ensemble. It provides opportunities for classically trained African American musicians to showcase their works. It sponsors chamber and symphonic orchestral concerts. Take a coffee or tea break at Il Caffe Latte where the atmosphere is cozy and inviting. Have some lox and bagels or one of their popular soy milk muffins.
