Havana Central at the West End – Harlem Travel Guide – Apple Apps
If these walls could talk!
The legendary West End bar and restaurant was a former beatnik hangout and perennial dive bar that hosted writers Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac, as well as legions of Columbia students. It also played an important part in the history of jazz in NYC. Many jazz greats including Dizzy Gillespie played its rooms.
Now it has reopened as a vibrant Cuban restaurant and bar. Havana Central is part of a chain of Manhattan restaurants that serve up Cuban generations-old family recipes. The best dishes are those that capture the true essence and flavor of traditional Cuban cooking — ropa vieja, the classic stew of shredded beef spiced with plenty of pepper and onions, and pernil, tender pieces of roasted pork laden with garlic.
Live Latin music abounds on Friday and Saturday nights from 9pm to 12am, and during Sunday brunch from 1pm to 4pm. This lively eatery features several weekly specials that are easy on the wallet, including the $12.95 prix-fixe lunch Monday through Saturday, which offers you an appetizer, entrée, and dessert. During Happy Hour, Monday through Friday (4pm to 8pm) mojitos are $5, sangria is $4, and beer is $3. Other daily specials include $1 Churros (fried glazed donuts) on Tuesday, $1 empanadas on Wednesday, and $6 mojitos on Thursday.

Literally a guide in my pocket

I can only subscribe to what other people already have told about the guide. It’s just great that I can read a place description, actually give a call its manager, find it on a map and even hook up on its Twitter channel to keep my eye on it. Very smart!
