James Carter

March 17, 2020 7:00pm

Known for stretching the boundaries on just about the entire saxophone and woodwind family, James Carter — as effective when erupting with volcanic extravagance on up-tempo stomps as in conveying the boudoir tenor saxophone function — mixes stormy romanticism and hard-boiled swagger channels the sound and sensibility of such ‘40s sax icons as Coleman Hawkins, Don Byas, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, and Earl Bostic, all personal heroes. In this evening’s edition of Desert Island Discs, Carter will present his all-time favorite tracks and discuss them in encyclopedic detail.
