Jazz great Louis Armstrong is inducted into the Apollo Theater’s Walk of Fame
The legendary jazz trumpeter, a native of New Orleans, joins such luminaries as James Brown, Aretha Franklin and Michael Jackson on the Walk as the iconic Harlem theater kicks off its New Orleans to Harlem Jazz Weekend
Jazz legend Louis (Satchmo) Armstrong will be inducted into the Apollo Theater’s Walk of Fame this week.
The famed trumpeter will be added to the walk, on 125th St. in front of the iconic Harlem theater in ceremonies Friday. Armstrong will join 17 others, including music greats James Brown, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin and Patti LaBelle.
The event will feature a New Orleans-style second line parade and presentations recognizing Armstrong, a native of The Big Easy.
“From Ella Fitzgerald to Duke Ellington to Louis Armstrong, the Apollo’s lauded lineage has earned it the distinction of being one of Harlem’s original jazz shrines,” said Apollo executive producer Mikki Shepard.

“We are excited to celebrate the Apollo’s jazz legacy, as well as the birthplace of this genre, by inducting Louis Armstrong into the Walk of Fame and presenting performances by some of the best jazz musicians performing today during the New Orleans to Harlem Jazz Weekend,” Shepard said.
The event kicks off the Apollo’s New Orleans to Harlem Jazz Weekend which includes performances featuring jazz vibraphonist Stefon Harris; pianist, singer and songwriter Jon Batiste and a concert with Irvin Mayfield Jr. and the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra.
