This electrifying musical recounts the 1976 Soweto uprising—in which black South African schoolchildren rose up in protest against apartheid—via the story of the teenage Sarafina who, when her outspoken teacher is imprisoned, is inspired to take a stand. Co-starring Whoopi Goldberg and the legendary Miriam Makeba, Sarafina! vividly blends rousing musical numbers with a hard-hitting look at the brutality of apartheid.
