The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture Acquires Jazz Legend Sonny Rollins’ Personal Archive

Big announcement today! The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, at the New York Public Library, announced the acquisition of jazz legend Sonny Rollins’ personal archive. The archives will be housed at The Schomburg, just two blocks away from where Rollins was born on 137th Street in 1930.
The acquisition will include personal papers, diaries, notes and drawings; Recordings of practice sessions, as well as recording takes from as early as the 1960s; Photos from his life on the road, with fellow musicians; and personal correspondence between Rollins and his wife and manager, Lucille Pearson.
The Sonny Rollins archive will be processed over this next year at the NYPL’s Library Services Center in Long Island City, and will be made available for research at the Schomburg Center when the project is concluded.
