Historic Harlem
October 27, 1904 2:35pm: The mayor of New York, George McClellan, cruises in the city’s new innovative means of transportation that will forever change how New Yorker’s get around – the Subway.
Some History:
- The first line traveled 9.1 miles and passed through 28 stations
- It ran from city hall in lower Manhattan to
§ General Central Terminal in midtown
§ west along 42nd Street to Times Square
§ finishing up north at 145th Street and Broadway in Harlem
On the evening of that same day, at 7:00pm, the subway opened its doors to the general public. More than 100,000 people rode that night. Each person paid a nickel to take their first ride on this new rapid system.
With all of the changes in the system since its original opening – it now transports 4.5 MILLION people each day into New York and runs 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
