Union Theological Seminary – Harlem Travel Guide – Sutro World
Largest theological library in Western Hemisphere
Founded in 1836 by the Presbyterian Church, Union Theological Seminary is the oldest nondenominational seminary in the nation. The school confers master’s degrees of Arts, Divinity, and Sacred Theology; doctorates in Theology and Philosophy; and joint degree programs with Columbia University. Union appointed its first female president—Dr. Serene Jones—in 2008. In 1910, Union moved to its present location in Harlem. The brick and limestone English Gothic architecture, by Allen and Collins, includes the tower, which adapts features of the crossing tower of Durham Cathedral, one of the finest examples of Norman architecture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Union building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 and designated a New York City Landmark in 1967. It is also home to the Burke Theological Library, the largest theological library in the Western Hemisphere. Due to declining enrollments, large sections of the campus are now on long-term lease to Columbia University. It also has an impressive list of past and present faculty, including Dr. James Cone, who is one of the founders of Black liberation theology.
