Alfre Woodard turns in a devastating performance as a prison warden whose many years spent carrying out death row executions have finally taken a toll. As the emotional wedge in her marriage deepens, Bernadine’s memory of a recently botched execution plague her daily. And as she prepares for her next execution, she is forced to confront the psychological and emotional demons of her job—and ultimately finds herself connecting with the very inmate she is sanctioned to kill. Earning a Grand Jury Prize at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, director Chinonye Chukwu’s sophomore feature is a morally complex character study about hope and redemption.
