Lapidus Talks @ Noon: Illegal Trade in Human Flesh: Illicit Slave Trading in the Atlantic World, 1833-1867

March 9, 2017 | 12:00pm – 2:00pm
Speaker: Lewis Eliot, PhD Candidate, University of South Carolina
lapidus_talks_Abolition in the British Caribbean has been celebrated as a vital cornerstone in the ending of slavery in the Atlantic basin. The realities of life for the now free Afro-Caribbean people, however, remained dangerous, given the consistent threat of re-enslavement from slavers from Latin America, Caribbean pirates, and nefarious people traffickers. This talk will examine the ramifications of this trade for the imperial governments involved, the smugglers capturing and selling their prohibited cargoes, and most importantly for the newly re-enslaved.
Cost: FREE. First come, first seated. For free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. All registered seats are released 15 to 30 minutes before start time, so we recommend that you arrive early.
