Modern Times

March 15, 2020 2:00pm

Directed by Charles Chaplin | 1936

Charlie Chaplin’s final silent film—enlivened by bits of inventive sound design—is an imaginative and hilarious send-up of the modern industrialized world. His classic Little Tramp character is a factory worker tightening bolts on an assembly line, until a mishap with an automatic feeding machine sends him off course. Mixing the joyfulness of Chaplin’s comedy gags with a satire of modern bureaucracy, Modern Times remains the funniest of the comedian’s social critiques.
