Cameron Todd Willingham was a poor, uneducated heavy metal devotee with a violent streak and a criminal record. After being convicted of an arson-related triple homicide in 1992, he spent the next 12 years on death row, finding an improbable ally in Elizabeth Gilbert, who unearthed questionable methods and illogical conclusions in his case—and battled with the state to expose suppressed evidence that could save him.
Laura Dern and Jack O’Connell star in this true-life story of the unlikely bond formed between an imprisoned death row inmate and a Houston mother of two. Based on David Grann’s 2009 New Yorker article “Trial by Fire,” director Edward Zwick powerfully portrays Gilbert’s fight for his freedom despite the staggering odds stacked against them.
